      Stephen grew up with a keen sense of wonder and curiosity, inspired by the endless variety that the theater of the sky has always provided. He made his first thunderstorm forecast in 1962 from the recess period in 2nd grade, where storms appeared on the western horizon. That was 3 years before the Palm Sunday Tornadoes of 4/11/1965. During that event, a tornado passed 2 miles north of our home. I remember that event very well.

      In 1991, Stephen attended the Tornado Symposium in Norman, Oklahoma, where he met Professor T.T. Fujita, creator of the F-Scale of rating tornado intensity and Professor Howard Bluestein, who was developing line-of-sight portable Doppler radar data collection of tornadic circulations and wind speeds. Stephen contacted Prof. Bluestein in late 2002 to propose studying tornadoes thermally by using the latest thermal imaging cameras. A National Science Foundation grant application was written and an SGER granted, and Stephen chased tornadoes in Tornado Alley in 2003 and 2004 with the Tornado Radar Intercept Team, and again in 2013. We were able to collect thermal images of three tornadoes in 2004, all in the same supercell thunderstorm.

      This is the experiential and analytical side of the talk. The aesthetics as recorded in imagery and drawings provide a wealth of visual experiences.
